Development

Zeek is an open-source system and we welcome and encourage contributions from the community, from small patches to new functionality. If you’d like to help with Zeek development, browse the information on this page. If you’re running into problems, or are unsure where to start, send a mail to the development mailing list and we’ll be happy to assist.

Development Codebase

To get the source code for Zeek’s current development version, clone our master git repository:

Resources

Roadmap: Lists our near- and medium-term goals for upcoming releases.
Development Mailing List: Discussion of all topics relevant to Zeek development, including strategy, roadmap, patches, code questions, etc. Note that general questions about using Zeek are better sent to the Zeek User List. Search the development mailing list’s archive using the field below.

Commit Mailing List: Auto-generated notifications of commits to Zeek’s git repositories. These mails include full diffs of the corresponding edits and are a good way of keeping track of changes. However, volume on this list is quite high.
Git Repositories: Lists the Zeek-related git repositories.
Issue Tracker: Tracks open problems as well as external contributions submitted for inclusion. There are also some guidelines on using the tracker.
Old JIRA issue archive: This bug tracker is no longer in active use. Users cannot make modifications or new tickets. Most relevant issues were migrated to GitHub issues, but the JIRA is staying open to archive tickets that may have been Good Ideas, but that were not migrated due to vagueness, difficulty, etc.
Notes and How-Tos: A collection of more specific notes helpful when working on Zeek.
Projects and Ideas: A list of development projects either already in progress, or waiting for somebody to take them on.
